In this special 'in-gallery' talk we explore the ways in which paintings and images can be read to increase our understanding of them and our satisfaction in the viewing experience.

Should a painting be explored as a whole or as the sum of its parts? Or both? How is the painting composed and structured? How does it set up a relationship with us as the viewer?

These questions will be explored by Dr Mimi Kelly and Corbett Lyon as they analyse four works from the Lyon Collection.

Vitruvius once declared that good architecture should embody three key attributed: firmitas, utilitas and venustas (strength, utility and beauty). But what truly makes a building remarkable? Is it more than just bricks and mortar?

Using examples from his own work and that of his architectural colleagues, Maddison will challenge us to consider what makes good architecture, and how our perception of architecture can be shaped by the art of television storytelling.

Spend the morning with Corbett Lyon learning how to set up a drawing in two-point perspective. Discover the fundamentals of sketching and colouring, and master the art of lines and proportions.
